Close Unjustifiable ICE Detention Facilities
As your constituent, I’m calling on you to close Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities within a year that meet the following criteria:
- Opened by the prior administration without adequate justification – including those opened in violation of ICE’s own process for obtaining new detention space
- In remote locations with compromised access to counsel and external medical care
With documented patterns of inhumane treatment or conditions
Message Body Goes Here
ICE detention has long been known for its abuse and inefficiency. Last year alone, increased use of force, solitary confinement, patterns of sexual abuse, forced sterilization, and an utter failure to protect people from COVID-19 were all reported from inside its facilities.
Through COVID-19 related litigation and advocacy, detention rates have recently been lower than we’ve seen in two decades – a dramatic drop that underpins how clearly unnecessary and arbitrary immigration detention truly is. With these numbers, you also have a historic opportunity to make a change: reversing egregious ICE policies implemented under Trump, saving taxpayer dollars currently wasted on empty detention beds, and most importantly, helping repair the harm that mass immigrant detention has caused people, families, and communities since inception. You can start by categorically shutting down unjustifiable ICE facilities, including those with horrific records of abuse and those located in remote areas far from legal counsel and medical care, and making sure that people released from detention due to COVID-19 can remain safely in their homes.
Your action will help shrink an inhumane system and end our nation’s newest system of mass incarceration of Black and Brown people. Please, shut down these unjustifiable ICE facilities.
Sincerely,
